The Plan

Establish a multi-block Free WiFi area in Hillsboro

Who benefits? Everyone

If you don't have internet at home, but have a WiFi capable device and are within our coverage area, you now have internet at home. Even if you do have Internet at home, now you have Internet in your front yard and across the street under the shady tree.

If you are visiting downtown Hillsboro as a conventioneer or tourist and you need directions to a restaurant or theater or particular address, you now have access to that information from ANYWHERE our network covers.

A public wifi system can be used for emergency services and allows law enforcement and other civil authorities to securely access their networks from ANYWHERE within our coverage area for critical data when it counts

We think a public WiFi network is a cool and economically sound idea that benefits all residents of Hillsboro.

How can you help out?

If you are in the coverage area and receiving "HILLSBORO-WIFI" on your wireless unit, follow these steps:

1) Purchase an indoor ($149) or outdoor ($199) unit from Meraki
2) Place it on a window, or on top of a roof - SCH40 plastic pipe works great
3) Connect it up to power
4) Email us (info@hillsboro-wifi.com) the serial number so that it can join our system
5) If a business, post a WiFi sign in your storefront

A wireless mesh network (WMN) is a communications network made up of radio nodes organized in a mesh topology.

The coverage area of the radio nodes working as a single network is sometimes called a mesh cloud. Access to this mesh cloud is dependent on the radio nodes working in harmony with each other to create a radio network. A mesh network is reliable and offers redundancy. When one node can no longer operate, the rest of the nodes can still communicate with each other, directly or through one or more intermediate nodes.
